From One Family’s Healing Journey to a Space for All Families to Connect

Every family experiences big emotions: joy, frustration, curiosity, overwhelm, grief, excitement, sometimes all on the same day. Yet few places are designed to support those moments with gentleness and intention. Z. Axl’s Dig Yard was created to be that place: a calm, thoughtfully designed environment where children and caregivers can explore, connect, and make sense of their feelings together.

This is a non-clinical space that offers a supportive, sensory-rich environment where families can practice regulation, connection, and emotional expression through play.

It also provides a distraction-free space for caregivers and children to be fully present with one another, strengthening communication, confidence, and emotional connection without the noise of everyday life.

What began as one family’s healing journey has grown into a space for all families to slow down, play with purpose, and build meaningful moments that last long after they leave.

Our Approach

Trauma-Informed Design

The way a space feels matters, especially to young children. That's why every design choice at Z. Axl’s Dig Yard supports a calmer, more regulated experience from start to finish.

Our trauma-informed, "museum-calm" boutique facility reduces unnecessary stress while creating opportunities for children to explore with confidence and caregivers to stay present.

  • Intentional Sightlines: Open layouts allow children to explore independently while keeping their caregiver within view, creating a steady sense of safety.
  • A Soothing Palette: Soft, natural colors reduce visual stimulation and help the environment feel calm instead of overwhelming.
  • Regulated Energy: We intentionally limit guest capacity and use grounding materials to create a lively space that never feels chaotic.

Our Approach

Our Space

The Emotion Selection Tunnel

The emotion selection tunnel helps families transition from the outside world into the yard with intention. As children move through the tunnel, they're invited to identify one of six core emotions: joy, anger, fear, sadness, disgust, or surprise. Instead of pushing feelings aside, we acknowledge them before playtime begins.

This simple check-in helps caregivers better understand what their child may need and gives each visit a thoughtful starting point. By turning emotions into something visible and approachable, children begin their session feeling seen, understood, and supported.

The Heavy Dig Path: Our Indoor Sandbox

When children identify with higher-energy emotions like joy, anger, or fear, they're encouraged toward our signature indoor sandbox. Digging, hauling, building, and moving sand provide the kind of heavy work that helps the nervous system feel more grounded.

The sandbox offers room to explore freely while channeling energy into purposeful, hands-on play that supports regulation and confidence.

‍

The Drafting Table Path: Art Studio

Children experiencing lower-energy emotions such as sadness, surprise, or disgust are guided toward our art studio, where creativity becomes another way to communicate. Drawing, painting, and other fine-motor activities encourage expression while providing a calm environment for reflection.

The studio offers a gentle "soft landing," allowing children to slow down, process what they're feeling, and engage at a pace that feels comfortable.

‍

Gentle Guidance That Honors the Caregiver–Child Relationship

Our team is trained to support families with warmth, attunement, and respect. Staff members model co‑play, offer gentle guidance during tricky moments, and help caregivers feel grounded and confident in the space. Their role is never to take over, correct, or direct, but to hold a calm, predictable environment where children and caregivers can connect without distraction.

Every interaction is designed to honor the caregiver‑child relationship and make families feel welcomed, supported, and seen.
