why the yard

In early childhood, emotions rarely arrive in words. They show up through movement, behavior, tone, and energy long before a child has the language to explain what’s happening inside. What looks like play, resistance, or intensity is often a nervous system trying to find balance in real time.

The Yard exists to meet children and caregivers in that space: where emotions are present, communication is still forming, and connection matters most. Every part of the experience is designed to support regulation first, so understanding and relationships can follow more naturally.

Our Story

Z. Axl’s Dig Yard began with a personal search for a calm space to be together during overwhelming moments after the loss of our founder’s son, Axl. In trying to support her daughter, Zoey, she looked for somewhere quieter, somewhere big feelings could be held without chaos or pressure.

When that space didn’t exist, she created it. Built in Axl’s honor and inspired by Zoey’s resilience, the Dig Yard became a sanctuary for families to slow down, reconnect, and move through emotion side by side.

Our Approach and Space

Z. Axl’s Dig Yard is shaped by trauma-informed design that supports how children naturally experience and express emotion through their environment.

The emotion selection tunnel acts as the entry point, helping families identify feelings before play begins, guiding them toward either the indoor sandbox for movement and grounding or the art studio for calmer, reflective expression.

Our space features:

  • Intentional Sightlines: Open views that keep caregivers visible, offering children a steady sense of safety while they explore
  • Soothing Palette: Soft, muted tones that reduce visual overload and support a calm nervous system
  • Regulated Energy: Limited capacity and grounding materials that maintain a balanced, low-overwhelm environment
  • Predictable Flow: Clear, structured zones that help children transition smoothly between different types of play
  • Sensory Balance: A thoughtful mix of stimulation and calm designed to meet different sensory needs without overload

A Sanctuary for Every Speed

Each family arrives with different needs, energy levels, and emotional states. We’ve designed the Dig Yard to meet those differences with flexibility and care. Some children need grounding and movement, others need quiet and reflection, and many move between both within a single visit.

We support:

  • Slow-to-warm children who need time to settle in
  • Sensory seekers who thrive on movement and input
  • Children navigating big or complex emotions
  • Neurodivergent children who benefit from predictable, regulated environments
