Know Before You Go

Plan Your Visit

Every detail at Z. Axl’s Dig Yard has a purpose. Our policies, play spaces, and intentional 90-minute sessions with limited capacity work together to create an environment where children feel regulated, caregivers stay present, and families have the space to connect without the distractions of a crowded play area.

Our space is designed for early childhood, with activities suited for toddlers through young school-age children (18 months to 7 years old).

Knowing what to expect ahead of time helps you settle in more easily, so you can spend less time navigating logistics and more time enjoying your visit together.

Parking

Z. Axl’s Dig Yard is located at the Bethel Shopping Center, a large strip mall anchored by a grocery store. Families can enjoy ample, convenient parking directly in front of our space, with additional overflow parking throughout the plaza. No street parking, no tight lots, just easy access every time you visit.

What to Bring

Parents and caregivers should bring socks; no barefoot walking is permitted, and little builders should wear Z. Axl’s Grip Socks in the play areas. We provide all tools, materials, and sensory elements needed for exploration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should my child wear?

Comfortable, sand‑friendly clothing is best for digging and creative play.

How long is an Open Play session?

Open Play sessions are 90 minutes. We cap attendance to keep the environment calm, predictable, and regulation‑supportive.

Is the space accessible?

Yes. Our studio is sensory‑aware and designed with gentle transitions in mind. While the space is fully navigable, we encourage families to leave strollers in the car or at home whenever possible, as our play areas are designed for free movement.

Children who use wheelchairs are welcome; however, our sandbox requires children to be lifted or assisted into the sand, and they must be able to sit upright safely during play. Alternative sensory options are available for children who prefer or require a different setup.

Can I bring a stroller?

We encourage families to leave strollers in the car or at home whenever possible, as our play areas are designed for free movement. If you arrive with a stroller, a staff member will help you find an appropriate place to store it during your session.

Arrival & Flow

What happens when we arrive?

A staff member will greet you, help you settle in, and answer any questions before you begin.

Where do we put our belongings?

You’ll have a designated spot for coats and shoes. Bags and personal items should remain with you.

How do we start playing?

Families are invited to ease into play at their own pace. There’s no right or wrong way to begin, explore what feels natural.

How do transitions work?

Our environment is intentionally designed to support smooth shifts between activities, helping children stay regulated and engaged.

Play & Exploration

What kinds of play areas are available?

Children can dig, build, imagine, and create across our construction‑themed sandbox and art studio.

Do caregivers participate?

Yes, you’re encouraged to join in, whether digging side by side, building together, or simply observing with presence.

Can children move between activities?

Absolutely. Children explore new textures, tools, and challenges at their own pace throughout the session.

Safety & Support

Who supervises the children?

Caregivers remain the primary support during play, with staff available to assist and maintain a safe environment.

What kind of sand do you use?

We use asthma‑friendly, allergy‑free, silica‑free, man‑made play sand designed specifically for indoor sensory environments. It’s clean, consistent, and safe for little hands, offering a therapeutic texture without the dust or irritants found in natural sand.

How do you handle cleanliness?

Materials, play areas, toys, and sand are cleaned and refreshed regularly to ensure a healthy, welcoming space. We worked closely with the Bethel Health Department and the Connecticut Department of Public Health to ensure our sanitation practices meet, and consistently maintain, all required standards for indoor sensory environments.

How do you support sensory needs?

Lighting, sound, and textures are thoughtfully balanced to support regulation and reduce overstimulation.

Booking

How do we reserve a session?

Choose your preferred time, reserve your spot, and arrive ready to explore. Open Play is designed to give families a calm, meaningful experience without rush or distraction.
